RE: Renting an RV for a family vacation

I agree with taking photos of your rental before the trip. We rented a 5er from American Dream Vacation to test out the RV lifestyle. We enjoyed RVing, but upon returning the rental they quickly sent guys all over the unit inspecting it. One of the first places their went to was the roof. They told us that we have put a small tear in the roof from a tree branch. For most normal owners the tear would be an inexpensive patch. They made us pay for the whole rubber roof to be replaced! It was in their small print as standard policy since these units are on consignment. The guy was apparently very used to this and explained not to worry it's covered by our auto insurance. That's when I pointed out "Ease for you to say that, but we have $1000 deductable"! Now we knew why they wouldn't offer us insurance before the trip. Pretty good scam! Just read the fine print and take photos.

RE: mesa verde rv resort

Yes, please post your comments on www.rvparkreviews.com. We always check there first before going into any park. I believe that these candid reviews will come back to haunt the owners and get them to clean up their park or go out of business.

RE: Class A or 5th wheel?

I think you really need to look at floorplans. I haven't seen any class A with a bunkhouse. Some have one bunkbed, but for fulltiming with three kids I would think that you need a bunkhouse model. That would be an advantage of a 5er. We have friends with a class A bunkbed model. They only use their unit for a few weeks a year, but DW still complains about make up the sofa bed for the third child every night. Just something to consider.

RE: Several outlets lost power....

That happened to us last summer. We found the GFCI outlet and could not get it to reset. After multiple trouble shoot attempts, DH went to Walmart bought a new GFCI outlet and we replace the old one. Everything worked great! I guess sometimes the GFCI outlet can go bad.

RE: Disaster Averted!!! Check them knobs!!!

My DH takes care of the LP tanks, so maybe I'm not understand everyone, but we never have the tanks on when we are moving. They are only turned on after we set up camp and are turned off before hitching back up. I admit that this is not my area of expertise so forgive my ignorance.

RE: pie irons questions

Wow! Thanks for all the great advice!! I was pretty sure we should go with cast iron, but it's nice to have it confirmed by most everyone. Thanks again for all the information!

pie irons questions

I've never used a pie iron, but am thinking about getting one. On researching I see cast iron and aluminum models in all shapes and sizes. I have two questions: 1. Which is better cast iron or aluminum? 2. What shape or size is the most versatile? I appreciate any input. Thanks!

RE: Need easy Halloween receipes for kids

Year ago we made spider cupcakes. I got the idea from a old family fun magazine. I found this posting of a similar idea. Save yourself some time and make the cupcakes at home. The kids can ice and put the legs and eyes on at the CG. spider cupcakes

RE: Chicken Mozzarella

Sounds good! I wonder if this could be adapted for the slow cooker? I avoid our oven, really heats up the trailer.

RE: what do your kids enjoy most about camping?

Riding bikes and making new friends. That is so my 9 year old son!! My 11 year old is a history buff and he loves to visit National Parks/Forts. Of course they both love their bunkbeds since they don't have any at home. Smores and swimming are at the top of their list too!

RE: Class b+ or motel

I have to agree with Mike & Rose. I don't think you will find much cost savings, but if you are thinking about purchasing an RV in the future renting first is the way to go. That's what we did.

RE: Dry camping and a couple of other questions?

I often camp next to folks using 'portable' totes to empty gray and or black tanks. They spend a large part of the afternoon making multiple trips back and forth then often spend MORE time cleaning up the mess they made when spills happen. For ME I'll take the 45 minutes out of my day to tow my trailer (with portable tanks attached) to the dump station, once a week and take the REST of my camping time for relaxing or hiking. Just my opinion. I've never seen a spill at any of the CG we've stayed at. Pulling in the awning, securing the interior contents, driving to the dump station with a possible line (rest of family waiting at empty camping space or in truck) and then having to return, level and set up all over again. In the mean time if you pull the portable tanks everyone else can stay at the camp site and maybe have a nice hot meal ready for you when you return. This topic is currently being discussed if you want to get more opinions. http://www.trailerlife.com/cforum/Index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/21911407.cfm

RE: Dry camping and a couple of other questions?

What a great trip! We did Yellowstone two years ago and loved it!! On our trip we staying at the full hookups (Fishing Bridge) in the park, but my understanding is that by staying at dry camp you will have more space. You will probably find that you are only in camp for sleeping. The only meals we ate at the CG was breakfast and dinner. We packed a lunch in our cooler each day so we wouldn't have to go back to the CG or pay the cafeteria high prices. I would recommend that you use the CG showers to conserve water and tank space. Paper plates would elimate washing dishes. Our tanks can only last about 3-4 days without dumping for our family of 4. If possible it would be nice to not have to hitch up and dump. It can be a pain to have to go back through the backing, leveling and setting up process everytime you need to dump. Can you get your hands on a portable waste tank? http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/product/thetford-smarttote-and-smarttote-lx-portable-waste-tanks/6073 Maybe the rental dealer has some that you can rent. Keep your eyes open on craigslist or even a garage sales for used tanks. These can be pulled behind your truck to the dump station so you will not have to hitch and move your trailer.

RE: new fifth wheel

I have to agree with previous posters. Either look to upgrade your TV or look for a TT. If you are upgrading for more space, have you thought about a hybrid? Several are very light weight and can be pulled easily with your truck. http://www.forestriverinc.com/nd/default22.asp?nav=rec&page=expandables Another light weight option is the Trailmanor http://www.trailmanor.com/ I don't want to discourage you from getting a 5er, but I think you would enjoy it more and feel safer if you had a different TV.

RE: Mini 5er Spotted

We saw a Scamp at a CG we were staying at a few years ago. Couldn't help driving by it and checking it out a few times. Another one is the old HiLo 5th wheel. I've never seen one in person, but it looks interesting. http://www.rvtraderonline.com/find/listing/1995-HI-LO-Funlite-93523322

RE: such a thing as "too big" for a fiver?

First off let me say "Good job" for waiting to pick your TV until after you pick your 5er. So many times on the forum you see postings of campers who buy an F150 and then are looking to get a 5er. :S Size is always a good thing to look at. As others have noted too large is sometimes limiting especially at state and national parks. However, you don't want to get something you will outgrow too quickly. We rented our first 5er before buying. The unit we rented was much larger than the one we ended up purchasing. We did like the extra space and features, but we didn't like the extra weight, size or cost of this larger 5er. The weight really was a concern to us. We already had our TV, but knew we wanted to do more mountain driving. We could really feel the TV pulling this heavy rental. After our rental trip we sat down and made a “must have”, “would be nice” and “no thank you” list of the rental’s features. We have been very happy with our smaller, lighter 5er. The lighter weight pulls easily, I sometimes forget we are pulling anything! As for the rain, this last summer we camped for two weeks and it rained every afternoon. Our boys played or read in their bunks. DH read on the sofa or worked on the computer at the table and I read or napped in our bedroom. We loved it!

RE: Questions about first Trailer Purchase

I think you need to look at some lighter trailers. Once everything is loaded you may find it too much for your truck. I'm not sure on the numbers, but check out Surveyor by River Forest http://www.forestriverinc.com/nd/default22.asp?page=floorview&model=SV-255RKS&choice=surv&nav=rec&name=1&series=RearSlide It looks pretty light. I also second the bunks idea. It is a must with kids!
